Fall 2019 Calligraphy Workshop
New day, more time per session!
Explore the art of calligraphy in this course for beginners. This workshop will introduce students to the Foundational Hand. This hand-written alphabet was developed by Edward Johnston in the early 20th century as a beginner’s alphabet and was instrumental in re-introducing the broad-edged pen (used by medieval scribes) to the modern world. This workshop will provide step-by-step demonstration and individualized instruction to help each student produce beautiful letterforms.
PLEASE NOTE: I find that if a class is a mix of experience, we all learn so much from each other. Thus, all my beginner workshops can be geared to individualized instruction. If you have taken my foundational class and want to explore this hand further or learn something completely new, join us. Contact me to discuss what you want to learn.
Students can apply what they learn in the study of Foundational to any number of broad-edged alphabets (Italic, Blackletter, Uncial – any of which can be studied in future workshops). Proper care of tools, good practice habits, spacing and layout, resources, and other calligraphic possibilities will be presented and explored as students open the door to this amazing art form. All materials necessary for Foundational study will be provided and are included in the fee. Other materials may be suggested based on interest in further study and are optional at student expense.
